Evaluation Question 7

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full production?

Looking back at my preliminary task I feel that I have gained much more knowledge than I had at the beginning of the year.

The preliminary task challenged continuity, match on action and the 180degree rule. Being able to trial different ways in which I can use those conventions of media not only saved time during the min task but improved my level of skill so that my main production could be more effective and look more professional.

I also got the chance to introduce myself to the editing software I would be using to edit my main task with. This made me more confident when approaching that stage of my main task as I had a brief but good enough understanding of where to start which also saved some time overall.

I have learnt to plan into much more detail what is within my camera shot which I wasn't really concerned about for the preliminary task.

Doing the preliminary task also gave me the opportunity to experiment with different camera shots and angles which later helped me decide which ones would be more appropriate and effective to use in my main task.

Evaluation Question 5

How did you attract/address your audience?

One of the ways in which i attracted my audience was through the use of costume. Looking at the results of m questionnaire, the audience felt that the use of the costume was very effective as it represented the social group accurately and made it easier for the audience to interpret the character's and the situation.

Another way in which i addressed the audience was through my use of music. The music has a contrast of low, bass notes and a higher pitch piano sound which reflects the two different personalities and contrasting characteristics of the two main characters. I chose this style of music as i felt it fitted the social group i was aiming to represent. I also wanted the piano to be the main sound as it reflects a high level of control (ballerina) and an innocent purity.

Evaluation Question 2

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Evaluation Question 4

4 Who would be the audience for your media product?

For every film genre there will be a different target audience. Sometimes the target markets overlap and can also be based on other films.

The type of person that would go and see an action film such as ‘The Avengers’ are most likely to be different to the type of person that would go see a horror film such as ‘The Purge’. These films would attract different audiences because of the general content. The elements that contribute to the type of genre of the film are: actors, the story line, film treatment and script (language). Therefore, for my film I need to specify and understand my audience and their preferences so that I can tailor my product to best fit my target market.

The age of my target market would be teenagers- young adults. This is because the story line and content of my product wouldn't be suitable or understandable to children roughly under the age of around 12-13.

The gender of the audience would mostly be female as the two main characters are female, therefore the social group they are representing would be more appreciated/ relatable by or with a female audience.

The activities represented are horse riding and ballet; this will affect the target audience. It is likely that they will have an interest in similar, if not the same sports.

Potential Target Audience

In order for me to make an effective production that will appeal to people, I first need to think about what elements are included in attracting different target markets and also what techniques I could use to attract/ address my own targeted audience.

For every film genre there will be a different target audience. Although sometimes the target market overlaps to different genres, an individual will mostly stay with a few different film genres that they find captures their own interest and keeps them engaged. Whether that interest and engagement is through humor, action, romance or the social groups that are represented in the film that the audience will relate to, the writer/creator or producer will first have to think and decide about which audience they wish to attract/address and how they will represent that through the type of genre as well as elements within film language that will assist the audience with interpreting and therefore enjoying the film.

I will need to do some research into what techniques and elements I can use within my production to attract my audience. However I first need to establish who my target market are and therefore increasing my ability to create an effective production that my target market will enjoy.
I could do this research by making a questionnaire and asking questions such as:

  • what genres of films do you enjoy?
  • what is it about those films that makes them enjoyable for you?
  • what type of film language do you find is most effective/ important in the process of representing this genre?
  • what are your hobbies/interests?
  • what age group are you?
  • what gender are you?

Asking these types of questions will not only help me identify the ways in which are most effective when addressing my audience but also it will help to specify the types of people that the different genres engage and therefore enables me to understand who my target audience will be.

Story Boarding Camera Shots

Story Board

To organize my scenes and which actors/props i will be needing for each one, i have put together a rough story board of the different shots i want to use and put them in order. This will help me to save time and film each scene efficiently and effectively.

Rough Edit

Rough Edit

(No sound)

This is my first rough draft of the camera shots.
After doing this draft I decided to remove some of the clips toward the beginning so that it builds up faster, keeping the audience engaged. I also thought about breaking up and mixing the shots of the ballerina and horse rider putting their shoes on to make sure the audience can easily make the connection between the two main characters. I haven't yet taken into consideration sound. This is because I need to make sure I have the right order of clips before thinking about sound effects and adding the backing track as it might not fit in as I move around the shots. I have also decided to add in an establishing shot of the dance hall to introduce the audience to the location being used, this will help them frame their understanding of the situation.

This edit should be watched without sound.

If I Could Have Any Location...

Costume Ideas

To represent the middle to upper class quality the two main characters share, it is important to use the correct uniform for both Horse- eventing and Ballet. by wearing the right costume it will emphasize the seriousness and competitive quality of the two characters. The connotation of a ballet outfit includes having strength but at the same time being delicate and light. the uniform required for horse eventing can vary. the simple colours are used for events such as dressage and show jumping, which can be seen as more precise, careful, controlled movements as apposed to horse racing or cross country where the rider wheres brightly coloured uniform which could be seen as less serious. By having the right costume the audience will be able to judge and subconsciously make connections between the two characters and their qualities/personalities.

Classical Music Copyright Rules

for my music research I have looked into different styles of music and their copyright rules.

I have focused on using classical music as i think it will fit my production best as it highlights the upper-class elements of the characters. Because of this i have looked at the copyright rules of classical music and this is what i found:

The law states that music composed by an artist that has bean dead for 75 years becomes public domain and individuals or companies are aloud to use it and make profit from it the piece.

In every piece of music there are two copyrights, the one of composition and one of recording. classical music rights are based on the recording and the arrangement (someones interpretation of the composition). if you were to play a piece of classical music by performing it yourself rather than using the original interpretation/ recording, then it would be your interpretation therefore having no copyrights attached; because it is the composer's original arrangement/recording/interpretation that has been copy written and not the actual composition.

from doing this research i have come to the conclusion that i would be aloud to use a piece of classical composition.

Backing Track For My Production

For my production I will use one piece of continuous music as a backing track. Using a continuous piece of music will help connect the different camera shots and scenes.

The piece of music I had made for my production is purely piano and cello. I wanted to keep the music simple and pure so i didn't want layers of instruments and a complex piece of music. I also wanted to stick to the style of classical music to emphasize the high class quality of the two main characters.

As the music progresses the tempo increases which will help increase the tension, as the cutting rate also speeds up. Also I chose to have the lower, deeper sound of the cello to contrast the higher, lighter notes being played on the piano. This mirrors the relationship between the two main characters that are seen in my production. The lower bass sound of the cello represents the darker, more cynical nature of the one character (horse rider). The higher pitch piano melody  highlights the innocence and vulnerability of the ballerina. The soundtrack in general contributes to the overall concept of contrasting individuals that is presented throughout the story line. Just like I have used a high contrast on the lighting effects for the camera shots to emphasize the difference between light and dark, positive and negative.

Actors For My Production

Emily Mullins

Age: 16

I have chosen Emily as one out of two of the main characters. this is because as a horse rider,i feel that she will successfully represent the right social group. Emily takes part in show jumping competitions as well as cross country competitions, therefore she holds the competitive qualities that i am looking to bring out in the two main characters.Because of the activities and sports she takes part in, Emily is seen as a middle to upper-class female with strong individual qualities. as well as having a strong physical ability, which is only a positive contribution to her character's traits and personality.Being English and from the area that my production is located in, it helps to make the regional identity of her character even more convincing as all the qualities i am looking to portray from the main character, Emily has.

Jazz Flowers

Age 14

Jazz takes part in point ballet, tap, modern, contemporary, commercial, hip hop, street and break dancing. Jazmine is a highly competitive young individual, who is capable of representing the same social group as Emily, because of her experience in competing and also her physical strength. Because these two actress' have such similar characteristics it will help the audience to make a connection between the two individuals. And because of how involved Jazz and Emily are in their activities it will mean their ability to portray the two characters will be more accurate than an individual who has no experience in this type of lifestyle.

Having two people who are already so involved in such lifestyles will make the film more easy to relate to and therefore more enjoyable for the audience.

If I Could Have Any Actors...

Part of my research includes looking into different actors so that I can consider what sort of actors will best capture and represent my characters and the social group I am trying to portray.

To help me find my own actors, I first looked at popular actors who would fit the genre and style of my production, to focus in on their qualities and characteristics that help make their roles so believable, therefore helping me look for those specific characteristics in my own actors.

 Emma Watson

  • Harry Potter series
  • Noah
  • Perks of Being A Wallflower
Emma Watson is a strong actress who is capable of playing a serious role, while having the capability to portray a variety of different characters, convincingly in different films. I feel that Emma Watson would be a great leading actress along side of Keira Knightly in my style of production. This is because it is an English production involving two strong, independent, competitive, middle to upper class females; she has the very real qualities of an upper class, independent young woman and will therefore represent that social group easily and effectively.

Christian Bale

  • Batman Begins/The Dark Knight/ The Dark Knight Rises.
  • Exodus
  • American Pshyco
Christian Bale is an English actor and like Emma Watson has the ability to play very strong, convincing characters using a wide range of different characteristics. In my production I would cast him as someone with high authority. He has proven to show this characteristic as very natural in the series of 'Batman' films he has done, I have confidence that he is able to lead a very serious and mysterious role convincingly.

Ewan McGregor

  • Angles and Demons
  • The Impossible
  • Trainspotting
  • Jack The Giant Slayer
Ewan McGregor has been in many films highlighting his potential to make a huge variety of social groups presented by his characters very real and believable. He is an English actor which all of the actors/actress' i chose have in common as I think it is a key factor in my production, it helps shape the audience's opinions and views on the characters using their regional identity. Regional identity is a key form of film language and is important for the audience to use as a guidance of the character's qualities, morals and personality. In my Production Ewan McGregor would be a more laid back character, however having an off part of his personality which raises suspicions that he might be capable of being a 'bad guy'. As well as using his acting skills to show this unsettling quality i would also use different forms of film language during his scenes such as music and camera shots.

 Keira Knightly

  • The Imitation Game
  • Pirates of The Caribbean
  • Pride and Prejudice
Keira Knighly would be the other leading lady in my production, sharing the same qualities as Emma Watson; Strong, convincing, independent, competitive young woman with an upper class up-bringing. In her past roles, Keira Knightly has proven to represent a strong individual better than some of her other roles. This gives me confidence that she is capable of effectively representing the right social group as well as being in competition with Emma Watson's character as to who the 'stronger' one is and who is the weaker more vulnerable character out of the two. this means that audience isn't led to the outcome away but are lead to the outcome throughout the story line, leaving it a mystery therefore being more interesting and gripping for the audience.

Other Actors:

Nicholas Hoult
  • Jack The Giant Slayer
  • X-Men: Days Of Future Past
  • Clash Of The Titans

  Emma Thompson

  •  Henry V
  • Saving Mr Bank
  • Harry Potter and The Order of The Pheonix

From this research into different actors and the roles they have previously played, i understand a lot more about what qualities i need to look for in my own actors and how those qualities will effect the standard of my production as well as how important the characteristics are to my audience. Next I will be analysing the qualities and characteristics of my own actors and justify why i have chosen them.

Cutting Rates

In class we have looked into cutting rates of scenes and how it can affect the audience.
cutting rate is a term for the amount of camera shots used in an amount of time or a scene.

This clip from Christopher Nolan's,' Batman The Dark Knight' we see The Joker chasing after Police cars and the black van that Harvey Dent is being protected in, after a few minutes into the scene we see that Batman joins this chase to stop The Joker. At approximately 3:13 minutes Batman arrives, and from this point the cutting rate of that scene speeds up significantly. This is when The Joker blows up the Bat mobile, so there are more camera shots added in a small amount of time so that the audience is aware of exactly what has happened, as well as the effect the event has had. A fast cutting rate contributes to building tension and the engagement of the audience.

However, a slow cutting rate can also increase tension for example in the context of a horror or jump scare film. It can create great anticipation for the audience making the viewers expect the worse of the situation and fear what is to come next. which is of course what you want from a jump scare horror film.

I can apply this knowledge of cutting rate effectively to my main task as a way of gripping and setting  a scene for my audience.
Evaluation Questions

1.  In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media?

I understand that i am being asked to review my research on forms and conventions of media using elements of film language such as costume, actors, location, camera shots/angles etc. I will then take my research and use it to analyse those different elements of my own media product to see if it challenges, uses or develops any of those areas of film language.

2.  How does your media product represent particular social groups?

  • character's qualities
  • how have I represented those qualities
  • what affect does it have on the audience

In this question i need to pick out the key characteristics and the personality of the characters/actors that I have chosen to use and explain how they may represent a particular social group.

3.  What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

This question is asking me to research different media institutions to find out what genre of film each institution distributes and what qualities they look for in a film that they chose to promote. This will help  me match the suitable media institution with my media product.

  • creation
  • distribution
  • consumption
  • appropriate to my genre

4.  Who would be the audience for your media product?

For this question I would need to appropriately decide on the elements of my product such as; style, feel, treatment, theme as well as taking into consideration the commercial aspects of it. To do this more effectively i can reflect on my product research.

5.  How did you attract/address your audience?

This question is asking me to identify what processes i used to make my product for the target market. There are  some questions i need to ask myself to help me identify these processes.
  • Is my product easy for my audience to relate to (behavior of characters, use of language, etc)?
  • What is it about my product that makes it interesting for the audience/ what elements could i have added or taken away from my product to improve the interest and engagement of my audience ?
  • How did I make my film appropriate for the targeted audience ?

6.  What have I learnt about technologies from the processes of constructing this product?

For this question i need to visit the pre- production , production and post production areas of my task and ask myself what technology processes they are, how I used them and how/ why they were or weren't useful.

7.  Looking back at my preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full production?

include areas:
  • planning
  • story boarding
  • editing
  • camera work
  • sound work
